They help the body to fight free radicals, they can slow the aging process, help prevent disease and promote a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. To take advantage of these benefits, it&#8217;s necessary to know which fruits are high in antioxidants. They may be enjoyed as is or in juice blends, smoothies or other types of supplements. People with dietary concerns, however, will want to consult a doctor before embarking on a rigorous diet program.</p>
<p>Fruits and vegetables are the biggest source of dietary antioxidants. Fruits like blueberries, strawberries, pomegranates, Acai and Goji berries are excellent sources of powerful antioxidants. To get a proper daily serving of antioxidants, it is recommended to get 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.</p>
<p>ORAC is the standard measurement of the total antioxidant power of food. ORAC is short for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. Nutritionist recommended we consume approximately 5000 ORAC units per day to offset the damaging effects of free radicals. However with today&#8217;s hectic lifestyles and time-crunched schedules getting even one serving a fresh fruit or vegetables into your diet can be a challenge.</p>

<li>Acai berries - touted as a super food, acai ranks high on the ORAC antioxidant scale and is growing in popularity as an additive to smoothies and snacks.</li>
<li>Black Chokeberries - also known as the aronia berry, the quinic acid contained within combines with antioxidant properties to help with urinary problems.</li>
<li>Blueberries - delicious and tart, blueberries can assist with urinary infections and eliminating free radicals known to cause memory loss</li>
<li>Kiwi - rich in vitamins, kiwi can promote good cardiovascular health</li>
<li>Apricots - apricots are high in antioxidants and beta-carotene, which is helpful for improving eyesight</li>
<li>Purple Grapes - these sweet fruits contribute to the antioxidant content of red wine, and are just as potent on their own</li>
<li>Pomegranates - a high polyphenol count makes pomegranates a staple for the dieter interested in good health</li>
</ul>
<p>Natural antioxidants can bring you many health benefits. It is now proven that regular consumption of antioxidant foods works as cancer prevention. Also antioxidants are great anti-aging agents.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Antioxidants, according to Wikipedia are molecules that are capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions are crucial to our existence, but they can also be damaging. This is why plants and animals maintain complex systems of multiple types of antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases. Wikipedia continues to explain that low levels of antioxidants can cause oxidative stress, which may actually damage or kill cells.</p>
<p>Most commonly, antioxidants are used in the form of various medications that are then used to help treat various medical problems. However, many people are not aware of the fact that the brain is extremely vulnerable to oxidative injury due to its high metabolic rate and elevated levels of polyunsaturated lipids. Antioxidants are currently under much scrutiny in the medical field. Among other uses, antioxidants are being considered in treatments for such neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and Parkinson&#8217;s disease. In 2007, WebMD published an article, which revealed that a recent human study had revealed that use of the antioxidant supplements beta-carotene, vitamin E or vitamin A slightly increased a person&#8217;s risk of death. The study also showed that there were no benefits or harm for using vitamin C supplements. The article explains how oxidative stress is caused by reactive &#8220;free radical&#8221; compounds circulating in the blood, which is a key factor in most diseases.</p>
<p>Non synthetic 100% natural vitamins are the a great way for maintaining your health because they can be absorbed by your body unlike synthetic. Synthetic vitamins are known for their immediate change to the body making you think they are absorbing if at all. With whole food vitamins there is no &#8220;multivitamin&#8221; because if you were to obtain the proper nourishment to any organ or area of the body it is better to treat that part of the body specifically one at a time.</p>
<p>With natural supplements smell the vitamins - Do they smell like chemicals? Or food? The other think to note is that whole food natural supplements are a longer term thing and health professionals that prescribe these say it takes the body three months to properly correct a health issue when feeding the area of the body in need.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every day we are exposed to air pollution, sunlight, smoke and more, all which create &#8220;free radicals&#8221;. The food we eat can also contribute to free radical damage and inflammation. Refined sugar, soft drink, white bread, pasta and excess coffee all contribute to the chemical reactions that produce free radicals. Among other effects in the body, free radicals attack your skin&#8217;s collagen layer, accelerating the creation of fine lines and wrinkles. This process is called, &#8220;photo aging&#8221;. Much research has been done with regard to the benefits of antioxidants to combat the production of free radicals. Recent research has shown us that topical Vitamin C can help to improve skin tone and elasticity, helps re-build collagen and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.</p>

Heres a summary of major antioxidants that should be considered for daily intake . . .</p>
<p>Researchers analyzed data from the Beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET). They focused on blood samples from 278 subjects with prostate cancer and 483 matched subjects without cancer. They analyzed blood levels of several carotenoids, including lutein vitamin A and vitamin E (alpha and gamma tocopherols), then identified correlations between those levels and the risk of lung and prostate cancer.</p>
<p>Results: In the overall population, the highest intakes of lutein, zeaxanthin and alpha-tocopherol were associated with a significantly lower risk of lung cancer. Women with the highest blood levels of lutein, zeaxanth in and beta-cryptoxanthin had the lowest risk of developing lung cancer. The risk reduction associated with these nutrients was 69% for lutein zeaxanthin. Men with the highest blood levels of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) were 41% less likely to develop prostate cancer.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Very simply put, an antioxidant is something that prevents or slows down oxidization. This can be very beneficial to the health, for instance the cholesterol in our bodies is not necessarily harmful until it becomes oxidized, which then causes it to start clinging to our blood vessels which as you know can then lead to some serious health related heart problems. Antioxidants can help to prevent this and thus make a very positive contribution to your overall general state of health and physical well being. They can also provide other benefits to your skin and hair. So asking and then answering what is an antioxidant is one of the key levels to acquire an understanding why eating food and drinking beverages which have antioxidant properties can make a positive contribution to your fitness levels and health.</p>
<p>Of course, if you&#8217;re really wondering what is an antioxidant this should hopefully inspire you to find more out about how antioxidants can help you live a healthier and fuller life. But unless you actually take action to improve your diet and therefore increase your intake level of antioxidants, then just possessing the knowledge itself will not provide you with any tangible or real health benefits. Adding additional helpings of fresh fruit and vegetables can be very helpful to you because they naturally contain high levels of antioxidants.</p>
<p>A simple and straight forward answer to the question, how to benefit from antioxidants is by eating fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fresh meat and seafood. There are also many supplements available in your local health shop, in supermarkets and online.</p>
<p>Antioxidants are present in vitamins or enzymes in your food, and the best sources are found in dark colored fruits like berries and red grapes amongst many others. You can take them fresh from hand to mouth or as juices. If you enjoy fruit juice, and I would guess you do, you can also blend different fruits. (One of my favorites is a freshly made blend of raspberries and orange juice which is quite delicious).</p>
<p>There are different types of antioxidants with different benefits and one or more are present in each type of fruit. The same thing goes for free radicals - which are the molecules that can damage cells and are precisely the antioxidant targets.</p>
<p>The thing is that free radicals appear in our bodies either from the environment (excess sunlight, smoking, pollution, even excess exercises) or are actually made within our bodies. Therefore it is not a one time affair but a continuous and natural state of affairs.</p>
<p>This means we have to ingest antioxidants all our lives. This is normal and this is how we have evolved and so perfectly natural.</p>
<p>In short it is absolutely natural and for thousands of years we have been getting the antioxidants our bodies need through our eating habits without knowing (and quite frankly without caring) about antioxidants.</p>

However, with our busy lives many people can&#8217;t eat as much fresh produce as they would like. Also bear in mind that when you buy vegetables and fruits during winter months, their antioxidant value is very low. Most vitamins are easily destroyed by light and storage, so tomatoes that are sold in a supermarket in December give you almost no health benefits, even though in general a tomato is considered a good source of antioxidants.</p>
<p>Common vitamins like Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are all powerful antioxidants, so all fruits rich in these vitamins should be included. But there are many more, for example red wine and red grape contains Reservatrol, an important antioxidant. Another great antioxidant Flavonoid can be found in green tea. So, the most sensible thing to do is to include a wide variety of different fruits, vegetables and berries in your diet. Berries are particularly good, because they all contain large quantities of antioxidant vitamins.</p>
<p>Whether or not vitamin supplements are as good for you as antioxidants from natural sources is debatable. Some doctors say that by taking antioxidant supplements you can meet most of your antioxidant needs. Others argue that supplements are not as beneficial as vitamins you get from food. The problem is that vitamins in a pill are not as easily absorbed by our bodies as nutrients we get from food. So eating mostly fast food and taking antioxidant vitamin supplements to compensate is not such a good idea after all.</p>

<p><em><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>The Oxidation Process</strong></span></em><br />
The oxidation process happens when cells of any type interact with oxygen, causing a change in the cells. This is an everyday normal process, and a good example would be when you cut yourself. The oxidized cells will die, and new cells are regenerated thus healing the wound. Your body is continuously going through oxidation, but must keep it under control, in order not to produce damaged cells which are commonly known as &#8220;free radicals&#8221; ,that can create problems to your health. This is why, antioxidants are needed in your daily diet. They help keep the free radicals under control.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>The Harm Free Radicals Cause</strong></span><br />
The free radicals attack good cells causing DNA damage, which creates mutated cells. These mutated cells, can open the door for disease. A healthy diet with natural foods, that have the antioxidants, is the key needed to keep these free radicals under control. Outside sources, such as, cigarette smoke, pesticides in our water and food, air pollution, alcohol abuse, and over-exposure to the sun, all can generate free radicals. Continuous exposure to these outside toxins will create deadly free radicals, starting a chain reaction. Just one free radical can cause the production of many. Your body can build its defense team with a variety of different antioxidants, working together, to stop the chain reaction.</p>
<p>Our Body&#8217;s Need for Antioxidants - Antioxidants are a combination of nutrients and enzymes.</p>
<p>The nutrients, are vitamins and minerals such as:<br />
· Vitamin C<br />
· Vitamin E<br />
· Beta-carotene<br />
· Selenium<br />
· Manganese<br />
· Zinc</p>
<p>the enzymes are proteins such as:<br />
Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)<br />
· Catalase (CAT)<br />
· Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx)</p>
<p>Each one of these nutrients and enzymes, with their antioxidant power, have their specific role in stopping the chain reaction of free radicals. There are also secondary antioxidants, to help prevent the free radicals from continuing on their path of destruction. This is why it is very important that your diet includes foods with antioxidants. Once the antioxidant has done its job, it too becomes oxidized so you must continue to replenish your body with natural antioxidants.</p>
<p>There are different sources of healthy food to get the different antioxidants your body needs, such as fruits and vegetables. One of the best sources, is the goji berry. This berry is packed full of many different nutrients, to help the body rid itself of free radicals, and to help prevent diseases. The best way to get the antioxidants your body needs, is through natural foods, such as goji berries ; not a supplemental pill. Researchers have found the possibility of your body getting an overload of certain nutrients when taking supplements along with your diet. Too much of a good thing can be harmful to your body. This is why it is much better to get the antioxidants you need through a natural healthy diet.</p></div>

<p>Vegetables are high in antioxidants content and this probably is not a surprise. Tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers etc are all excellent sources.</p>
<p>The spotlight is on eating fruits and vegetables that have rich color tones. The reason is that, such foods are rich in what are known as phytonutrients.</p>
<p>Phytonutrients are often mistaken to be vitamins and/or minerals. But the truth is that they are in a broader sense Pigments, or more precisely, they are a pigment’s biologically active constituents. The skin of vegetables and fruits contain this concentrated nutrient. This nutrient is responsible for their color, hue, scent, and flavor. Phytonutrients are the best antioxidant foods that exist in nature.</p>
<p>Recent clinical trials have revealed that this nutrient can boost the strength of your immune system, and also may assist in preventing certain types of cancer.</p>
<p>So, next time you&#8217;re walking through the produce aisle, remember the thumb rule; the deeper and richer the color of the fruit or vegetable, the more is the phytonutrient content. Therefore, if you are choosing between white and red onions, get the red ones. If you are choosing between green grapes and red grapes, go for the red ones. Same with the peppers, instead of green peppers, try yellow, orange, purple, or red.</p>
